Activity Summary:

Activities and Events

a. Essay Contest:

  1. All three 1AD-area high schools (Bad Kreuznach, Baumholder, and Friedberg, Germany) participated in an essay contest for 7th - 9th graders. Over 250 students submitted essays commenting on the Law Day themes suggested in the film “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
  2. The Army/Air Force Exchange Service main exchanges in Baumholder, Friedberg, and Bad Kreuznach, donated $300 in gift certificates ($25 per certificate) as prizes for the contest.
  3. Local coordinators in each area graded the essays and chose winners from each school. On Law Day, attorneys from each local area went into the students’ classrooms and awarded the prizes after having in-class discussion sessions with the students on Law Day themes.

b. Mock Trials:

  1. In Bad Kreuznach, students and Army Judge Advocate worked together to try the case of the United States v. Big Bad Wolf. Mr. Wolf was charged with the attempted murder of Mr. Curly Pig, of Three Little Pigs fame. The students acted as the prosecution and defense counsel. A volunteer judge advocate presided over the case. A 12-member student jury heard the case. The trial was held in the school auditorium for the entire 7th and 8th grade classes and their parents. Over 150 students from Bad Kreuznach participated.
  2. In Baumholder, thirty-five (35) 12th grade students took part in a mock trial of members of the “Memphis Mafia” charged with the negligent homicide of Elvis Presley. Working with their teacher and a volunteer judge advocate, the students drafted their own witness statements, created their own exhibits, and prepared opening and closing arguments. A jury consisting of volunteer parents heard the case. A volunteer judge advocate presided as judge.

c. Article:

  • Two volunteer judge advocates wrote editorial pieces for publication in the Stars and Stripes, a government-sponsored daily newspaper circulated Europe-wide for service members, Department of Defense civilian workers, and family members. The newspaper published the articles on 1 May 2000 and 3 May 2000.

d. Classes and Presentations:

  1. Volunteer judge advocates gave presentations to six (6) Junior ROTC classes in Bad Kreuznach. The presentations covered various aspects of this year’s Law Day theme. The attorneys also answered questions on a wide range of legal issues of interest to the students. Approximately 150 students participated.
  2. Volunteer judge advocates gave presentations to three (3) high school classes in Baumholder and Friedberg, Germany. The presentations focused on democracy, diversity, the jury system, racial discrimination, equal protection and other topics. Approximately 100 students participated.
