Bio: Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins
Carolyn Jefferson-Jenkins is the President of the League
of Women Voters of the United States, the political advocacy and membership organization
of the League of Women Voters. The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political
organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in
government, works to increase public understanding of major policy issues, and influences
public policy through education and advocacy.
Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins is the 15th president of the League of Women Voters of the United States and chair of the League of
Women Voters Education Fund, the citizen education and research organization of the League
of Women Voters. As president of the League, Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins works to increase
citizen participation in the electoral process and leads the education and advocacy work
of the League on public policy issues. She is the first woman of African-American descent
to head the League. Dr. Jefferson-Jenkins is a recognized authority on the voting rights
of African Americans and is the author of The Road to Black Suffrage and One Man
One Vote: The History of the African-American Vote in the United States.
