Mediation
Tips for Speakers

Following are some tips to help speakers enhance their presentations.

  • Preview written materials or any videotape that will be used in advance and have copies of Choosing Mediation Over Litigation and Tips on Settling Parenting Issues printed out and ready to use as handouts.
  • Consider the age, size, experience and concerns of the audience when planning your remarks and supplemental materials.
  • Pace your program. Leave time for discussion and questions.
  • Don't try to cover more ground than you have time for. It's better to carefully discuss a few concepts than to overwhelm your audience with unnecessary information or jargon.
  • Be enthusiastic and lively; use humor appropriately if you are comfortable with it.
  • Try to make mediation relevant for your audience by using examples to illustrate our points, but be sure to maintain confidentiality.
  • Encourage participation from your audience. Ask them for examples and opinions.
