Informing Teens about Transition to Adulthood

Here’s an idea that’s a natural for Law Day. How do we tell kids about the law that will affect them at the next stage, when they hit the age of majority?

With funding from the State Bar of Nevada Board of Governors and the ABA Fund for Justice and Education, Nevada’s Young Lawyers Section published a 15-page booklet entitled Coming of Age in Nevada to educate high school seniors about their legal responsibilities as an adult.

The book discusses such topics as voting, jury duty, military service, driving, alcohol consumption, consumer credit, property leases, and domestic relations issues. Working with the state’s education association and Department of Education, as well as local bar associations and school districts, volunteer lawyers distributed the book in the classroom and answered students’ questions.

The book is being revised to reflect new laws and judicial rulings, and the Nevada Young Lawyers Section is expanding the program to include young adults outside the traditional education system. In addition, the Nevada Coming of Age Project Director Brett Kandt is now spearheading an ABA Young Lawyers Division committee to develop and distribute a similar book nationwide.

Similar handbooks are available in a number of states. For more information, contact Kandt at bkandt@govmail.state.nv.us.
