Presenting a Program on Naturalization

Looking for a great way to tie Law Day and citizenship together in one attention-getting package? Consider making naturalization programs—citizenship by choice—a centerpiece of your Law Day outreach to the community. With more than a million people going through the naturalization process each year—and seven million eligible to go through the process—this is a way to reach a significant population in your community. At the same time, it shows the rest of us the enthusiasm and commitment to democracy that new citizens bring.

Why Is Naturalization Important?

Through naturalization legal immigrants become citizens of the United States. By naturalizing, immigrants show their willingness to become full members of our society and participate in the democratic process.

The naturalization process gives Law Day planners plenty of opportunities for creative programming, particularly in the citizenship requirements (applicant must know the fundamentals of U.S. history and government) and the naturalization ceremonies, which are often held on Law Day around the country.

This article was prepared by the ABA Center for Immigration Law and Representation. The Center, with the ABA Coordinating Committee on Immigration Law, conducts a variety of activities to improve the rights of immigrants and increase their access to the justice system. The Center also educates lawyers, state and federal judges, and members of the public about the scope and effect of the immigration laws. The Center is completing a guide for involving bar members and associations in naturalization outreach and assistance initiatives.
