Publicizing Law Day through Bookstores & Libraries
Action Steps

  1. Identify potential area locations for displays.
  2. At least two months before Law Day, call area librarians and bookstore managers to pitch your display and presentation idea.
  3. Follow your phone call with a personalized letter explaining your goals and a sample promotional display package.
  4. Suggest subject areas or specific titles to be displayed based on the Law Day theme. Ask booksellers and librarians to recommend additional books to promote.
  5. Discuss with interested stores and libraries possible dates for a presentation or reading.
  6. Find out (through bookstores or publishers) whether your area is home to any authors. If so, make contact for a possible presentation.
  7. For new titles, find out whether the author might be planning a promotional visit to your area around May 1st.
  8. Contact literature, history and law departments in local universities or community colleges for possible speakers/authors.
  9. Decide on your presentation format. Will an author read and take questions? If you wish to conduct a panel discussion, who will moderate?
  10. Don’t forget the kids! Consider presenting a play or a story time with Ben Franklin or Sojourner Truth characters to engage young people in history and literature. Invite local students to the presentation.
  11. Pitch your project in the local media. Distribute flyers, create ads and public service announcements.
  12. Remember to write thank-yous to the participating libraries and booksellers.
