Publicizing Law Day through Bookstores & Libraries
With this project, Law Day goes on display. Bookstores and libraries are often eager
for innovative ways to showcase their collections, and by working with bookstore managers
and librarians, your group can help create public displays related to this years Law
Day theme.
Historical titles that tell of our governing document and its creators, biographies of
those who fought for the American dream, and fictional novels dramatizing the struggle for
constitutional freedoms in daily life can be easily combined in an attractive window or
tabletop display at your local bookstores and libraries. Your group can provide the sites
with a promotional package of window dressings such as Law Day theme posters, stand-up
display cards, and bookmarks.
This project was successfully piloted by the ABA in Chicago for a previous Law Day.
Almost half of the booksellers contacted created displays. All were enthusiastic about the
project and expressed interest in participating in subsequent years.
In addition to creating displays, you can elucidate the theme further by hosting Law
Day programs at the participating sites. Authors could be invited to discuss or read from
their works individually or as part of a panel. Local literature or law professors can
also be informative discussion leaders. Your program might explore themes of justice and
morality presented in classics like The Scarlet Letter or Of Mice and Men,
focus on a historical figure such as Susan B. Anthony or event such as the passage of the
26th Amendment. Or, you can focus discussion on current social topics such as free
exercise of religion or affirmative action.
