Tips for Preparing for Mediation

Following are some things to think about prior to mediation:
- Define the specific issues you want to discuss.
- Identify your needs and interests -- decide what is really important.
- Establish your priorities.
- Know your legal rights.
- Explore a wide variety of possible solutions.
- Anticipate the other person's point of view and interests.
- Be sure your ideas are realistic, reasonable, and possible.
- Be willing to compromise.
- Work to maximize the joint gain, or minimize the joint loss.
- Consider the mutual benefits of agreement.
