Mediation
Planning Your Program
Design a program which will fit your audience's needs. One audience may be students at
the elementary or high school level, but other groups may benefit from a program on
mediation. Offer an evening program on resolving disputes to a parent-teacher group, a
church, or community organization. You may wish to develop a special program on resolving
conflicts between family members or seniors and their adult children.
Once your program and audience are planned, begin to line up a speaker. You will be
more likely to schedule the guest speaker of your choice if you make your invitation
early. Because complications have a way of coming up at the last minute, develop an
alternative plan.
Provide your speaker with information about the audience, including its anticipated
size, background, and particular areas of interest. The Talking Points on Mediation and Tips for Speakers may help your speaker, and be sure to order
additional materials -- which are referenced with links below -- well in advance. The
general discussion of mediation in the sections Choosing
Mediation Over Litigation and Tips on Settling Parenting
Issues may be printed out and photocopied for audience handouts. Send the guest
speaker a letter detailing the format and length of the program, the exact time and
location, and directions to the site, as well as a copy of handouts or supplemental
materials.
