Law Library of Congress

In celebration of Law Day on May 1st, the Law Library of Congress will examine one of the most profound pieces of legislation to affect United States history: Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. A panel of distinguished thinkers will convene to examine some of the ambiguities, the document's far-reaching effects and the man who penned it.

Moderated by The News Hour Congressional Correspondent Kwame Holman, the panelists will include:
The Honorable G. K. Butterfield Member of U.S. House of Representatives (D-NC)
The Honorable Jesse Jackson, Jr. Member of U.S. House of
Representatives (D-IL)
Dean Kurt Schmoke, Howard University
Professor Emeritus Roger Wilkins, George Mason University

The discussion will be held on Friday, May 1, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Members’ Room in the Jefferson Building, on First Street across from the Capitol in Washington, D.C. Some of the Library’s unusual copies of the Proclamation will also be on display.

The event has been sponsored by the Friends of the Law Library of Congress and is free and open to the public, but seating is limited. Advance reservations are required (202-707-9834, email). ADA accommodations must be requested 5 business days in advance by calling 202-707-6362 (voice/TTY) or email.
