Fairfax County Virgina is celebrating Law Day

LAW DAY MAY 1st THEME: The Rule of Law: Foundation for Communities of Opportunity and Equity

On Law Day, the law firm of Weiner, Rohrstaff & Spivey, PLC will be holding its 8th Annual Law Day fundraiser for the Fairfax Law Foundation. The foundation does many civic activities, including funding the public law library, providing pro bono legal services for those who can not afford legal representation, numerous outreach programs in the schools, etc.

party starts at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 1st and will go until 8:00 p.m. Last year approximately 300 people attended. This year, we are expecting a much larger crowd. Most of the Judges from Fairfax have attended in the past, as well as judges from Arlington and Alexandria.

The featured highlights of the event are Fairfax County Sheriffs Department Honor Guard presenting colors, musical performances by 20 piece GMU Jazz Ensemble, Irish Band “Edsel Road”, and performers from the Award winning Boyle School of Irish Dance. Also featured, is a Shoe Shine company that gives a professional shine to those who donate to the cause. The Fairfax City Police send "Mr. Law," a 12-foot inflatable police officer to “mingle” with the crowd.

The party is outdoors and very casual. It's a WEINER Roast, and all they serve is a variety of different Hot Dogs. No burgers ... no chicken... just Weiners. It has an "ole time" feel, root beer floats, popcorn and cotton candy and a 20-foot projection screen to run silent Charlie Chaplin movies.

The Virginia Beach Bar Foundation's 2008 Law Day Gala Event

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Law Day with the Virginia Beach Bar Foundation at its Inaugural Law Day Gala Event. The 2008 Law Day Gala Event will take place at the beautiful new Sandler Center for the Performing Arts and will include a performance by the highly sought-after humanities scholar Clay Jenkinson. Appearing in the persona of Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Jenkinson will explore the third president’s views about the rule of law and its importance in protecting our freedom and individual liberties. After his presentation, "The Rule of Law-Foundation for Freedom, as Presented by Thomas Jefferson," Mr. Jenkinson will answer questions from the audience both in and out of character. Mr. Jenkinson is one of the nation’s leading interpreters of Thomas Jefferson and has lectured about and portrayed Jefferson in forty-nine states over the past nineteen years. He has performed before presidents, Supreme Court justices, state legislatures, countless corporate, public and student audiences and has appeared on numerous television and radio programs, including as host of NPR’s "The Thomas Jefferson Hour". His performances are always humorous, educational, and thought provoking, and his appearance at the 2008 Law Day Gala Event will be no exception.

Lakeside Elementary School in Richmond is Celebrating Law Day.

Law Day, May 1, 2008, students and faculty at Lakeside Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia, will be excited to see and hear, from none other than, George Washington himself. George, or Kevin Gantz, is a member of the Virginia Patriots, Inc., reinacting the "Give me liberty or give me death" speech at St. John's Church in Richmond, Virginia every summer. Kevin will come to Law Day dressed in an authentic colonial general's uniform and his height adds to the realism. He has the demeanor of a general and will make quite a positive impression on the students and faculty. Because May 1 is near the SOL testing timeline, George will be speaking about his life and times, in relationship to SOL requirements. George will talk about:

  1. What motivated you, George, to select Law as a career choice?
  2. The importance of grades, schooling, respecting parents and self-discipline as a young student.
  3. The personal satisfaction in becoming a lawyer, and President, and,
  4. Personal examples of interaction between Thomas Jefferson, George Wythe and John Marshall.

He will visit upper grade classrooms to distribute Law Day pencils and visit lower grade classrooms to distribute easy-to-understand judicial coloring books. This opportunity allows history to come alive to students.
