Southern District of Indiana is celebrating Law Day 2008

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana is teaming up with the Indiana Bar Foundation for its first Law Day celebration. 90 local high school juniors and seniors will visit the historic Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse in downtown Indianapolis for a discussion on the rule of law in post-9/11 America. Local attorneys Matt Gutwein and Geoff Slaughter will lead the students in conversation and also conduct a hands-on activity. Students will then be treated to lunch and presentations by a federal district judge, assistant U.S. attorney, deputy U. S. marshal, and federal community defender. Events will take place on May 1, 2008. Indiana Court of Appeals is celebrating Law Day 2008

The Paralegal Studies Program at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College will sponsor Law Day '08 and will host the Indiana Court of Appeals on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Cecilian Auditorium. This is our 26th celebration of Law Day at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

We will begin the day with a session at 9:00 a.m. with the speaker, C.L. Lindsay. Lindsay is a former attorney who left his practice to found the Coalition for Student & Academic Rights (CO-STAR). He is a nationally recognized expert and leader in the field of student rights and academic freedom. Lindsay will be presenting Campus Computing: From Free Speech to Facebook. This program will teach students what they need to know about their online lives: what their rights are; how the laws operate; what potential liabilities await them; and how to protect themselves both legally and personally when on the internet.

The Indiana Court of Appeals, with Judges Riley, Kirsch and Robb, will hold an oral argument at 10:30. The case is Gary and Katherine Hoesman v. Daniel Sheffler, et al - 77A01-0708-CV-385. Calendar The morning will conclude with a cracker-barrel session where students will be encouraged to ask question of the judges, lawyers, and/or educators.

Since the first of the year, Paralegal students have visited area middle school classrooms discussing the rule of law, have appeared on television and radio promoting the day, and have coordinated the attendance by area middle and high school students, teachers, counselors, and the general public.
