Yolo County Bar Association is celebrating Law Day

The Yolo County Bar Association will be hosting a Law Day event for local High School students in Davis, California on Thursday, May 1st. The Law Day celebration will feature interactive games, a pizza lunch, and speakers on the importance of the rule of law for communities of opportunity and equity. The YCBA is also sponsoring a student essay contest, "There Ought to be a Law," asking students to suggest a new law or a change to existing law. Awards will be announced at the luncheon. The YCBA will also be presenting its annual Liberty Bell award to a local non-lawyer who has has promoted better understanding of the rule of law, encouraged greater respect for law and the courts, stimulated a sense of civic responsibility, or contributed to good government in the community.

Administrative Office of the Courts in San Francisco is celebrating Law Day

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC) has partnered with the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to develop the Real DUI Court in Schools project which seeks to expand DUI prevention programs such as DUI court trial and sentencing programs and the "Courage to Live" program in middle and high schools throughout California. To this aim, the AOC in collaboration with the California Channel, will deliver a DUI sentencing program, "Choices & Consequences" to schools via live cable television and webcast on May 1, 2008 (Law Day). The 90 minute broadcast will originate from Sierra Middle School in Stockton, CA. The Honorable Richard Vlavianos, Judge of the Superior Court, San Joaquin County, will preside over the sentencing hearing, as well as facilitate the educational program, that follows. Placer County Bar Association is Celebrating Law Day

May 1, 2008: Placer County Bar Association Members will be speaking in high schools and middle school classrooms throughout the County about law day and "The Rule of Law."

The Bar Association is also sponsoring an essay contest and art contest for High School Juniors. The winner of each will receive a scholarship and also present their essay and piece of art on "The Rule of Law" at the annual Placer County Bar Association Dinner.

The Placer County Peer Court Program will present it's annual awards dinner on May 1, 2008 at the Loomis Memorial Hall, Loomis, California.

This is the 50th annual national celebration of Law Day and Law week. If you would like to volunteer to assist in Law Week, please contact any of the sponsoring organizations.

Central District of California is Celebrating Law Day

The United States District Court, Central District of California is celebrating Law Day.

The name of the event is "Law Day 2008: The Rule of Law."

The program will be held on April 22 - 25, 2008, where the court will host 1100 students representing 16 area high schools over a period of 4 days.

The locations of the sessions will be held in various district judge courtrooms in the U.S. Courthouse, 312 N. Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA.

Each of the 16 sessions offered will consist of a mock trial with the students participating as the judge, attorneys, bailiff, and witnesses. An actual judge and actual prosecutors and defense attorneys will assist the students. The remainder of the students will be divided into small groups to act as individual juries. After the jury groups deliberate and render verdicts, the actual judge will discuss the mock trial results and the meaning of Law Day and this year's theme. The program will conclude with speakers from the offices of the U.S. Attorney, Federal Public Defender, Probation, Pretrial, and the U.S. Marshall.
