Michigan is Celebrating Law Day on May 1st 2007.

L'Anse Creuse Middle School North, located in Macomb, Michigan, is a school where all of our students--650, grades 6 - 8--participate in Law Day activities each year. Our principal, John Da Via, values the importance of the law and how it effects our student population. All of our students, in their social studies classes, write a position paper, based on one of the "should questions" given from the state contest.

Since we value student writing, and we are always looking for opportunities for our students write for a "real world" audience beyond their teachers, Law Day is a perfect fit. It allows our students to show their knowledge and understanding of the law and the founding document of our country, the Constitution. The Law Day essay is a piece of writing that our students in Michigan must be able to write as a part of their social studies curriculum: taking a position on a question and supporting that position in three ways: with a core democratic value, with prior knowledge from social studies, and with data/research, in this case evidence from a Supreme Court case.
