Cochise County is celebrating Law Day on May 1st 2007
Cochise County's 5th Annual Law Day celebration includes a variety of events this year. Buena High School's Youth Commission has joined with the Law Day Committee to help with our planning. Local attorneys and juvenile probation officers have been giving presentations on this year's theme, Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy, to county area schools. Essay, poster and graphic arts contests were organized with heavy participation. On April 24th, the Court of Appeals, Division Two, will conduct oral arguments at Buena High School in Sierra Vista. Junior High Mock Trials will also be held in early May with local attorneys as coaches.
On May 1st at 10:00 a.m. on the front steps of the historic Cochise County Courthouse in Bisbee our Law Day 2007 Ceremony will be held. Keynote speaker is Presiding Juvenile Judge Ann Littrell. Also joining as speakers will be Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard and Colonel Michael Boardman, head of the test directorate at Ft. Huachuca and an attorney. Buena High School's Junior ROTC will conduct the Color Guard. Winners of the essay contests will read their essays and winners of the poster and photography contests will have a moment to comment on their artwork. There will be a luncheon sponsored by the county bar associations.

Glendale City Court is celebrating Law Day on May 1st 2007
Glendale City Court in Glendale, AZ will be coordinating its annual Law Day event by hosting 43 top social studies students from nearby Copper Canyon High School on May 1st. They will be greeted by our City Councilmember who represents their school district. The students and Councilmember Joyce Clark will conduct a mock city council meeting on teen curfew. Prior to Law Day, the students will complete a lesson plan on city ordinances and citizen involvement in public policy debate. The students will receive presentations from our city prosecutor, one of our public defenders, and the city attorney. They will also participate in a court tour.

Dysart High School Teen Court is celebrating Law Day on May 1st 2007
The Dysart High School Teen Court located in El Mirage, AZ will be participating in the First Annual Youth Teen Court Summit in Phoenix, AZ on May 1 and May 2, 2007.
We will have nine Teen Court members and their advisors present at this event. Everyone involved will tout the efforts and accomplishments of our Teen Court, both verbally and through displays. The advisors will present a CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) program to all participants as well.

Pima County is celebrating Law Day on May 1st 2007
The Superior Court of Pima County, in conjunction with the Pima County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, will again be celebrating Law Day. This year Law Day will be held on Monday, April 30, 2007 at the Pima County Superior Court where a record high of 269 students and 16 teachers are expected to attend.
The program will begin at 10:00 a.m. when Presiding Judge Jan Kearney will welcome the students and teachers. A panel discussion will follow with Hon. Stephen Rubin from the Pima County Juvenile Court, Adelita Grijalva, the project manager for Pima County Teen Court and a member of the governing board for Tucson Unified School District, and Monique Lyon, an assistant Pima County Public Defender. Elliot Glicksman, an attorney in private practice, will moderate the panel discussion. After the panel discussion, the students will be escorted to various courtrooms where they will have the opportunity to observe hearings and interact with judges. Next the students will be provided lunch in the jury assembly room. The program will conclude at 1:00 p.m., at which point the students will return to school.
In connection with Law Day, the Young Lawyers Division of the Pima County Bar Association is organizing an essay contest open to all high school students in Pima County. The essays must be postmarked by April 6, 2007, and the top three winners will be announced at the Law Day program. The first, second and third place winners will receive plaques with their names and gift certificates in the amount of $100, $75 and $50, respectively, and they will have their pictures and essays printed in the Tucson Citizen.

The Maricopa County Bar Association Young Lawyer's Division is holding numerous Law Day events:
Essay Contests- An essay contest was sent to all 7th and 8th grade schools in Maricopa County with a question based upon ABA's 2007 Law Week theme "Liberty Under Law: Empowering Youth, Assuring Democracy." Attorney volunteers will grade the essays and an awards ceremony will be held on May 2, 2007 at the Arizona Supreme Court. The Supreme Court Justices will hand out awards to the top three students from each grade, 7th and 8th, and they will discuss the essay topics with the students and their parents and teachers. There will be a luncheon following the ceremony.
On May 2, 2007, Lynda Shely, from The Shely Firm will be speaking at a continuing legal education seminar. The CLE topic is "Ten Things Never to Do as a Lawyer or a Judge." This event will be held at a local restaurant with a happy hour to follow. Participants will be able to attend and receive one hour of ethics continuing legal education credit and will be able to meet fellow attorneys and judges in Maricopa County.
