Conferees explored how law and religion compete with, and yet also complement, one
another in establishing rules and sanctions, normative orders, and ethical systems.
Specific foci included:
- Philosophical and legal bases for separation of church and state, especially in view of
increasing religious pluralism;
- Recent First Amendment controversies (e.g. the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, school
vouchers, school prayer, etc.);
- Role of organized religions in advocating legal change vis-a-vis such issues as
abortion, reproductive technologies, and physician-assisted suicide; and
- Impact of religious traditions on law and legal systems.
