OVERVIEW

WHEN: May 13-15, 1999 [Thursday-Saturday]

WHERE: San Antonio, Texas [Adam's Mark Riverwalk Hotel]

THEMES: Conferees explored how law and religion compete with, and yet also complement, one another in establishing rules and sanctions, normative orders, and ethical systems. Specific foci included:
  • Philosophical and legal bases for separation of church and state, especially in view of increasing religious pluralism;
  • Recent First Amendment controversies (e.g. the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, school vouchers, school prayer, etc.);
  • Role of organized religions in advocating legal change vis-a-vis such issues as abortion, reproductive technologies, and physician-assisted suicide; and
  • Impact of religious traditions on law and legal systems.
