Privacy, the Common Good, and Individual Liberties in the 21st Century: A Dialogue on
Policy, Law, and Values
Editor's Note: Six social science, humanities, policy, and legal scholars discuss a
wide range of viewpoints on privacy. The conversation traverses privacy as a cultural
construct, historical perspectives on privacy, the tensions between privacy and the First
Amendment, how celebrity and privacy have come to clash, and legislative responses to new
claims for individual privacy protections. Both the United States and international
perspectives are offered by the scholars.
