Holding a Conversation

Introduction

One of the most important tasks is the selection of the conversation topic appropriate for your participants.

Go to the topics, conversation starters and resources provided on this site. You may wish to use one or more starter for each conversation or select your own. Newspaper op-ed pages, letters to editors, poems, and stories might be used as starters or additional resources. Adapt or use only a part of a conversation starter, article, or primary source document if that will suit your needs.

The topics provide an overview of some issues upon which to build a conversation. The conversation starters are brief, accessible and provocative ways to jump start your conversation and provide participants with a common starting place. The resources include background materials, selected readings and key documents.

Classrooms: Activities on this site are intended for middle and high school students, especially in civics, law, government, and American history courses.

Workplaces: The materials will also appeal to adults, and a conversation can easily fit within a one-hour session. Employees can provide their own lunches and enjoy the convenience of remaining in the workplace to participate in Constitution Day programming.
