Division for Public Education: Black History Month 2003




 

The Public Education Division of the ABA celebrates Black History Month (February) by featuring four prominent African-American lawyers and jurists throughout the month. These individuals are being recognized for their exemplary service to the community, their professional record of groundbreaking achievements, and their exemplary service to the legal profession.

Week 1: Barbara Jordan—The first woman and the first African American to deliver the keynote address at a major political party convention.

Week 2: William Henry Hastie—The first African American to serve as a federal trial judge and the nation's first black federal appellate judge.

Week 3: Gabrielle Kirk McDonald—The former president of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia.

Week 4: Damon J. Keith—U.S. 6th Circuit Court judge and recipient of ABA Thurgood Marshall and Spirit of Excellence Awards.
