Division for Public Education: Black History Month 2002




 

Black History Month logo The Public Education Division of the ABA celebrates Black History Month by profiling four prominent Black lawyers, one a week for the month of February 2002.

The four individuals we will profile during Black History Month 2002 are:

  • Week 1 (Feb. 1) Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander, the first African-American woman to be admitted to the Pennsylvania bar (1927)
  • Week 2 (Feb. 8) Edward W. Brooke, the first African-American elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote
  • Week 3 (Feb. 15) Jane Bolin, who in 1939 became the first African-American woman judge in the U.S
  • Week 4 (Feb. 22) Bryan A. Stevenson, named by his peers as Public Interest Lawyer of the Year
