Conversations in Schools: Ground Rules for Students

Conversations in Schools

Ground Rules for Participating

  • Show respect for the views expressed by others.

  • Although a frank exchange of conflicting views can be fruitful, keep dialogue within the boundaries of a civil conversation.

  • Be brief—don't monopolize the conversation. Your teacher will ensure that all who wish to speak have a chance to express their views.

  • Direct comments to the group as a whole rather than to your teacher.

  • Don't let disagreements or conflicting views become personal; name-calling and shouting are not acceptable ways of conversing with others.

  • Don't interrupt when others are expressing their views. Your teacher will make sure everyone has a chance to speak or respond to someone else's comments.
