Concluding the Conversation

Even though a thought-provoking dialogue is, in itself, a good outcome of any conversation, participants may want a sense of closure to the discussion. It may be sufficient to remind them that the group has reached its goal of delving into complex, perhaps controversial issues, and learning about the thoughts, feelings, and values of a number of people from different backgrounds. Below are a few suggestions for a capstone activity.

  • Have participants share with others what they've learned from the conversation or how their views have changed or been broadened.

  • Challenge participants to identify areas of common ground.

  • Allow time for participants to evaluate the conversation by filling out an evaluation form.
