ABA Day 2008 Issues
Legal Services Corporation Funding (House and Senate)
The ABA strongly supports a significant funding increase for the Legal Services Corporation. The goal for ABA Day (and beyond) is to gain or reinforce the Member's support for LSC, and to get their firm commitment to actively work on behalf of LSC funding throughout the appropriations process.
S. 186, Attorney-Client Privilege Protection Act (Senate only):
The ABA strongly supports S. 186 and H.R. 3013, comprehensive reform legislation designed to roll back a number of harmful federal agency policies that are seriously eroding the attorney-client privilege, the work product doctrine and the constitutional rights of employees. These federal agency policies—adopted by the Justice Department, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and many other agencies—pressure companies and other organizations to waive their privileges and to take unfair punitive actions against their employees as a condition for receiving cooperation credit and fair treatment during investigations. Although the House passed H.R. 3013 overwhelmingly last November, S. 186 is still pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
ABA Day 2008 Consultation Topics
In addition to the ABA Day issues, ABA GAO staff will meet by conference call with participants who plan to lobby targeted Members of Congress on an additional "hot topic." Please do not try to discuss more than three topics in any Hill visit.
The one-pagers are attached. The conference calls will take place the week of April 7. Please RSVP to the designated GAO Lobbyist, who will coordinate by e-mail with all interested parties to select the most convenient date/ time.
