NAWL Opposes Nomination of Charles Pickering to Court of Appeals
Chicago, IL
Letter from NAWL
President Zoe Sanders Nettles to the Honorable Orrin G. Hatch regarding
the appointment of Charles Pickering to the Fifth Circuit Court
of Appeals. Pickering is anti-choice and opposes equal rights for
women.
October 13, 2003
The Honorable Orrin G. Hatch (202-224-5251)
Chairman, Committee on the Judiciary
United States Senate
RE: Charles Pickering Nomination
Dear Senator Hatch:
As President of the National Association of Women Lawyers, this letter is to inform
you that NAWL opposes the nomination of Charles Pickering to the
Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Mr. Pickering opposes equal rights
for women and abortion rights. As a Mississippi State Senator, Mr.
Pickering voted in favor of a convention to propose a constitutional
amendment to ban abortion, and he voted against state funding for
family planning groups. In 1976, he chaired the subcommittee of
the National Republican Party that approved a plank calling for
an amendment to the US Constitution to make abortion illegal. Mr.
Pickering also opposed the Equal Rights Amendment.
NAWL therefore opposes Mr. Pickering's nomination to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Zoe Sanders Nettles
President
