SUPREME COURT JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG RECEIVES NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN LAWYERS’ MANSFIELD AWARD

    Chicago, IL

CHICAGO, June 26, 2002 The National Association of Women Lawyers will honor United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with the Arabella Babb Mansfield Award at its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

The Arabella Babb Mansfield Award is the association’s highest honor and is named for the first woman to become admitted to the bar in any state. NAWL will recognize Justice Ginsburg for the numerous contributions she has made to the legal profession, including her work in eliminating gender discrimination, with this year’s award.

Justice Ginsburg, who was nominated to the high court by President Clinton in 1993, is recognized for her well-reasoned opinions, her collegiality on the court, her dedication to fairness and the promotion of access to the justice system. As an attorney, Justice Ginsburg was active in numerous bar association and professional affiliations, including participating as a founder and counsel to the Women’s Rights Project of the ACLU, a council member of the American Bar Association’s Section of Individual Rights and Responsibilities, and a council member of the American Law Institute.

"We are pleased to award Justice Ginsburg with this honor. She typifies the essence of the Mansfield award and the ideals of NAWL," said Ellen Pansky, president of NAWL.

The law firms of Dickstein Shapiro Morin & Oshinsky LLP and Jenner & Block also will be honored with the President’s award in recognition of their continued support to NAWL and their commitment to the mission of equity and advancement for women in the profession.

The National Association of Women Lawyers is a national voluntary bar association devoted to the interests of women lawyers and the promotion of women’s right in general. Founded in 1899, the NAWL has historically served as an educational forum and an active voice for the concerns of women in the legal profession and women worldwide.
