Manage Expectations – It is vitally important that we manage the expectations we set for ourselves. Our feeling of success or failure often rides on how we perform measured against our own self-established expectations, so we must manage them intelligently.

Sometimes I gain perspective if I consider that even Olympic gymnasts sometimes fall during routines they've practiced – and done perfectly – hundreds, if not thousands of times. If these elite athletes can't always get it right, even after thousands of hours of training and perfect performances many times, then how are we supposed to?

As lawyers and professionals, we're hard-wired with a passion for success and achievement. Consequently, we have a natural tendency to set very high expectations, and this is where we must be careful. I try to be realistic and set expectations that are achievable, and this does not mean perfection all the time. Even though establishing realistic expectations is not always easy or comfortable, I would rather err on the side of delivering good news, than disappointment.

Establish a Strong Support System – None of us – not even the most talented – operates in a vacuum. We need people in our corner; people we can always depends upon, people we trust, people who care about us and will be with us through thick and thin. Support systems can also be comprised of our faith, our value system, our beliefs, our self confidence, and our reputations.
