The International Law Committee advocates for women's rights in the international arena and for United States support of international action protecting women. Recently, NAWL has advocated for the acquittal of Amina Lawal, the release of Tibetan nuns imprisoned for peacefully demonstrating against China's occupation of Tibet, a stop to human trafficking and sexual slavery, and humanitarian relief for Liberian women.
For more information or to get involved with the International Law Committee, please contact: The National Association of Women Lawyers is in the process of forming a Legal Specialists Board to assist legislators, policymakers and the media with background information about laws regarding women's rights or which have a particular impact on women. The Board will consist of specialist lawyers who can provide information about specific areas of law, including: Women and the Workplace; Women and the Criminal Justice System; Women and Health Care; Women and Education; Family Law; Women in the Military; Women and Finances; and Women and Retirement. The Board will not provide legal advice or referrals for advice or policy recommendations. NAWL is in the process of seeking volunteer experts on specific subject areas.
For more information or to become active with the Legal Specialists Board, please contact: The Legislative/Administrative Law Committee analyzes proposed and new legislation for its impact on women. The committee works closely with Senator Barbara Boxer's office to determine issues of importance, then issues press releases and notices to our members. Recently, NAWL supported an independent commission to investigate the sexual violence scandal at the Air Force Academy. The Membership Committee is responsible for maintaining and increasing NAWL membership. The Membership Committee is always chaired by the Vice-President of NAWL. As the oldest women's bar association, NAWL has a history of outstanding women leaders, and the membership committee continues to recruit new members who will work toward the promotion of women in the profession. For more information or to get
involved with the Membership Committee, please contact: The Mentorship Committee pairs practicing lawyers from NAWL's membership with law students around the country. Mentors can be any level of seniority and in any area of law. A full description of the program's aims and policies can be found HERE. To register as a mentor, click HERE. The Program Committee plans educational and social programs for NAWL's Annual, Midyear, regional meetings, and other events. The Program Committee is chaired by the President-Elect of NAWL. At our annual meeting in San Francisco, NAWL cosponsored a luncheon with National Conference of Women's Bar Associations honoring Justice Barbara Jones and featuring keynote speakers Stella Odife and Senator Barbara Boxer. This year, the programming committee is co-sponsoring a number of events throughout the country, including Texas Women Lawyers Annual Event, ABA Division for Public Education Law Day, and the March for Freedom of Choice. In addition to putting together awards luncheons for the annual and midyear meetings, we are planning an all day program in New York City, Washington DC, and Chicago geared toward helping women in law firms succeed in the long run.
