Selling Your Ideas in the First Two Minutes
[Handout
1] [Handout
2 ] [Handout
3 ]
In reality, every moment counts when you are in front of an
audience
be it a client, your boss, a committee or a speaking
engagement at a conference like the Midyear Meeting. This program
will take your communication skills to the next level in a highly
interactive, fun session. You will uncover the secrets of the
pros. More specifically, you will learn:
How to capture the attention of your listeners in the first
two minutes so that they pay attention to your entire presentation;
How to establish trust and credibility;
How to address the listeners' needs immediately through a core
message.
Being a strong business communicator is critical to any association
executive. Knowing how to deliver messages so that people understand
and are motivated to take action is not a "nice to have"
skill; it is an essential one.

Legal Roundup: Corralling New Issues for Associations [Handout]
Between federal and state legislation and other decisions impacting
the nonprofit sector, it is time to bring yourself up to date
on the numerous, cutting edge issues facing your association.
One ever-changing set of issues involves the wonderful world
of cyberspace from faxing to e-mailing and everything in between.
Use and abuse of intellectual property including copyrights
and trademarks are always problematic for the association trying
to manage its volunteers and events. Penalties for violating
federal antitrust laws have been significantly increased. Learn
what has been happening in the legal environment and how your
organization may be impacted.
Speaker: William E. Walters, Denver, CO, director and shareholder,
Walters & Joyce, P.C.

what are some myths and mistakes regarding the selling of sponsorships.

Champagne
Services on a Beer Budget: Tips on How to Provide Great Services
with Little Time, Money, Staff [Handout]
Members are continuously demanding more for their dues dollars.
All bars, regardless of size, location, or status must find
ways to offer more for less. It makes no difference if you are
a voluntary or mandatory bar, small or large - members want
to know "What else do I get." This panel will include
staff from a local bar, state bar, mandatory bar, and voluntary
bar. They will share ideas in the form of quick tips in a fast-paced
program on some of the services they offer to members. Come
to learn about ideas for services that you can offer your members
and how to do it for less.
Speakers: Linda Oligschlaeger, Jefferson City, MO, Membership Services Director, The Missouri Bar (Moderator); Jim Calloway, Oklahoma City, OK, Director of the
Management Assistance Program, Oklahoma Bar Association; Rick
Troy, Mt. Clemens, MI, Executive Director, Macomb County Bar
Association; Pat Yevics, Baltimore, MD, Director of Law Office
Management Assistance, Maryland State Bar Association; and Jan
Wade, St. Charles, IL, Executive Director, Kane County Bar Association
Membership
Matters: What Members Want and How to Tell Them About It
(Sponsored by the Communications Section) [Handout]
As bar staff we know the world is moving fast. The Internet,
technology, and the global economy are constantly influencing
our member's professional and personal lives. In light of such
rapid changes, bar staff must know how to adjust their services
and communication messages to illustrate membership value. Our
presenter Sarah Sladek of Limelight Communications will discuss
how to "rethink" your bar services for a stronger
association as well as provide examples on how to communicate
value to your members. Ms. Sladek also will discuss how generational
segmentation-with different sets of expectations-can assist
us in engaging new generations.

Managing
Risk & Preventing Loss: Let's Be Careful Out There!
[Handout]
This program will review the ever-growing list of potential
risks for your association and suggest ways in which to minimize
and reduce those risks. Nonprofit organizations are no longer
'exempt' from litigation and the courts are willing to find
these entities liable just as they would a for-profit entity.
The abuses associated with the Enron scandal have led to new
regulation and potential legislation that does not differentiate
between these entities. The IRS continues to focus on the nonprofit
world, and even once-loyal employees have found ways to take
off with some of the cookie jar.
Speaker: William E. Walters, Denver, CO, director and shareholder,
Walters & Joyce, P.C.
HR Rx:
The (Juris) Doctor Is In [Handout]
Salt Lake City employment lawyer Lauren I. Scholnick discusses
the top ten recent changes in employment law, proving once and
for all that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Ms. Scholnick will provide practical pointers to inoculate your
bar against poor HR practices before they reach epidemic proportions.
Topics include updates on Fair Labor Standards Act, sexual harassment
and disability discrimination, just to mention a few. Isn't
it time your bar had a check-up?
Speaker: Lauren I. Scholnick, Salt Lake City, UT, attorney,
Utah Legal Services, Inc.

Voyage into a Sponsor's Mind: Understanding the Sponsor Decision-Making
Process [Handout
1] [Handout
2 ][Handout
3]
We hear their words, see their expressions and experience their
reactions
but what is really going on in the typical sponsor's
mind? Bruce Erley, a consultant to various corporate sponsors,
has developed a unique insight into their internal thinking
process that few of us ever see. Like the 1966 movie of the
same name, we'll miniaturize and be injected directly into a
sponsor brain, traveling to the creative right side to understand
the subjective, altruistic reasons behind a decision as well
as the analytical left side to discover the dollars and "sense"
of a yes or no. If there is time, we might even visit their
libido or early childhood memories.
Speaker: Bruce L. Erley, Broomfield, CO; President, Creative
Strategies Group

a lemon for your bar? This session will explore these questions
and more as bar executives share negotiating skills and tips
that have worked for them.

to become the bar association's leaders, as well.
Speaker: Mark Levin, CAE, CSP, Columbia, MD, President, BAI,

the success of your LRIS, and discuss some conventional wisdom

What
Are RSS News Feeds and Why Does My Web Page Need Them?
[Handout]
RSS news feeds are a hot item among certain groups of techies,
but why should the rest of us care? RSS can be used to push
your web content out to many interested parties at very little
cost. Bars with limited budgets can use incoming RSS news feeds
to provide free new web content that is updated frequently.
The beauty of RSS news feeds is that they move content instantly
and automatically with little effort after the initial setup.
This session will convince you that everyone needs familiarity
with this new method of delivering online content.
