Lawrence R. Baca (Pawnee) is President of the Native American Bar Association and the Senior American Indian attorney at the United States Department of Justice.
"I am a member of the ABA in large measure because I am a minority bar leader. As a minority bar leader it is extremely important to engage as many contacts and partners as you can within the larger body of lawyers and bar members nationally.
I will always put a great deal of my energy and bar activity time into the Native American Bar Association; however, because it is important that we, as Native Americans, participate in the full spectrum of legal work and bar association work it is also important that I join and be active in the "majority bar." As minority lawyers we are more than minorities, we are also members of the national legal profession and we share many concerns that are common to all members of the profession. Being a member of the ABA gives me a forum for those issues.
In order for our profession to reach its full potential, we, as racial and ethnic minorities, must ourselves become symbols of as well as advocates for diversity."
