Honoring Justice Kennedy highlights full
Annual Meeting schedule

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy receives ABA Medal at 2007 Annual Meeting

United States Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy will receive the association's highest honor—the ABA Medal—during the the ABA Annual Meeting in San Francisco in August.

"There are so many reasons to honor this justice, including his dedication to preserving and promoting the rule of law, and his tireless work on federal sentencing reform. He deserves this honor most, however, because he singly represents the best of our profession," said ABA President Karen J. Mathis. "He is a fighter for justice and an advocate for all—an example for every judge, every lawyer and every law professor, not just in America but all over the world."

Kennedy joined the Supreme Court in 1988, after his nomination by President Ronald Reagan. He had been serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit to which he had been appointed by President Gerald Ford in 1975.

The ABA Medal recognizes exceptionally distinguished service to the cause of American jurisprudence. It is awarded only in years when the ABA Board of Governors determines a nominee has provided exceptional and distinguished service to the law and the legal profession.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer will deliver the keynote address during the Rule of Law Initiative Luncheon. Breyer, who was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, will then receive the Rule of Law Award, which he shares with pro bono volunteers for the ABA's Rule of Law Initiative. The ABA presents this award to leaders who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to promoting the rule of law in the developing world.

You can read more about these events and learn the status of recommendations proposed in the House of Delegates or tips from many of the Meeting's continuing legal education programs at the ABA Annual Meeting online: www.2007annualmeeting. Check back during the meeting for daily updates to the site that will serve as a one-stop online resource.

And, if you are not attending, the site will allow you to listen to Kennedy, Breyer and other key speakers as well as portions of the policy debates.

In addition, a selection of conference CLE programs will be summarized shortly after they occur, with details about the program's instruction on issues that affect your practice. You may learn about business boot camp for solo practitioners, about managing IP assets on a global basis or about best practices in law firm financial management.
