Business Law Section sponsors project for law firm lawyers who perform internal functions related to ethics, loss prevention and risk management

The rapid growth in the number of lawyers within law firms who do some sort of ethics function has led the ABA Section of Business Law to initiate the “Firm Counsel Project.”  The purpose of the project is to build a community of lawyers who perform these functions in firms, law departments and other offices.  These lawyers may serve on committees charged with ethics, give ethics advice, provide education about ethics, handle malpractice liability claims and disciplinary matters, assist in identifying conflicts of interest and assist in client intake functions for the firm.

The initial focus of the project will be in three main areas:  in-person discussion roundtables in cities around the country, the Firm Counsel Project listserve, and focused programming at ABA Business Law Section and Center for Professional Responsibility meetings.

The first focused meeting, a three-hour CLE program, is slated for the Section of Business Law’s Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C., March 15-18, 2007.  A national roundtable is being planned for the ABA National Conference on Professional Responsibility, scheduled for June 1, 2007, in Chicago.

More information about the project, and sign-up instructions for the project’s listserve, are available at the committee’s Web site. Non-members are welcome to join the project.
