Annual Meeting features dozens of CLE programs that help lawyers in their everyday work

Where can a lawyer go for advice on electronic document preservation and production? Is there a one-stop shop for identifying warning signs of potentially problem clients, and how best to communicate with all of your clients? How can lawyers – especially young ones – learn about what is permissible and what is not in multi-jurisdictional practice?

These are just three topics that will be presented as part of dozens of continuing legal education programs at the ABA Annual Meeting next month. The Young Lawyers Division will sponsor, in addition to other programs, "A Young Lawyer's Roadmap to the Ethical Hazards of Practicing Law in Other Jurisdictions." The session will present some of the most common situations in which lawyers face questions as to what they can and cannot do in jurisdictions where they are not licensed. In the GP/Solo Division's "Solo Day: Perfecting Your Practice, Perfecting the Attorney-Client Relationship, Handle the Matter Effectively and Have Happy Clients," speakers will provide tips on how lawyers can take advantage of no-tech and low-tech ways to increase proficiency, efficiency and profitability; help those in attendance learn the benefits of documentation and procedure manuals; and offer guidance on how to retain clients with better communication techniques – start to finish.

And in "Best (and Most Ethical) Practices for Electronic Evidence (Document Retention, E-Discovery, Litigation Holds, Spoliation and Sanctions)," a panel of experts will provide their insight into the latest, best and most ethical advice on electronic evidence, which has lawyers everywhere confounded given recent sanctions in this area.

Other CLE programs will recap recent Supreme Court decisions, discuss intricacies of doing business internationally, provide insight into alternative dispute resolution, look at several aspects of elder law, and provide much more useful information.

A chronological list of many of the CLE programs talking place in Hawaii is online. The full Program Book [PDF] has also been posted.
