ABA Day in Washington is coming up soon

"ABA Day in Washington," which gives ABA, state, local and specialty bar leaders the opportunity to meet with their members of Congress, is fast approaching. April 6 is the deadline for registering for the May 2-4 event.

ABA Day in Washington provides an opportunity for ABA members to join with their fellow state, local and specialty bar leaders to address issues before Congress that directly affect them, their clients and the legal profession as a whole.

This year's event is co-chaired by H. Thomas J. Wells Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., and Carolyn B. Lamm of Washington, D.C. Wells can attest to the effectiveness of this program. "As [former] chair of the Section of Litigation, I attended my first ABA Day with low expectations of success," he said. "Everything you need to know about the status of issues and how to most effectively present that information is presented at the Lobbying Workshop and Opening Session. I was well received by all members of the Alabama delegation, and they were pleased to discuss issues that matter to the justice system. At least one changed their position on one of our most important issues, and is now a strong supporter of Legal Services Corporation funding. Participating in the ABA's legislative advocacy program, including ABA Day, really makes a difference!"

For early arrivers, ABA Day in Washington will kick off Tuesday, May 2, with a Renaissance of Idealism in the Legal Profession Program and Reception featuring Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. On May 3 ABA members will hear tips about how to get the most out of meetings with Members of Congress, and learn more about the key issues that are the subject of ABA Day lobbying. Wednesday afternoon and Thursday are set aside for meetings with association members' own Members of Congress. Program highlights include a Capitol Hill reception at the Library of Congress, and a May 4 breakfast with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy. Sen. Arlen Specter has also been invited to speak at the breakfast.

ABA Day in Washington is coordinated by the ABA Governmental Affairs Office, and cosponsored by the Section Officers Conference, the Young Lawyers Division, the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the National Association of Bar Executives. More information on the event is available online.
