Best practices resource guide available for firms looking to “do well by doing good”

An ardent believer that lawyers have an ethical and professional responsibility to perform pro bono and public service work, ABA President Michael Greco established the Commission on Renaissance of Idealism in the Legal Profession in August to find ways to mitigate institutional obstacles that can make it difficult for lawyers to do such work.

The commission has developed an online Pro Bono and Public Service Best Practices Resource Guide to help law firms and other legal employers create more opportunities for their lawyers. The interactive guide is a searchable directory of model pro bono and public service programs that legal employers can learn from as they develop their own. And legal employers can also submit their successful programs for inclusion in the guide so that they may benefit others.

The guide includes a drop-down menu of all the programs listed by name, and allows legal employers to search by practice setting (corporate counsel, government, law firm or solo/small firm); by the type of initiative (such as resource development, training and education, legal projects or public service projects, or recognition programs); by the sort of partnership a program might include (bar associations or law schools, for example); or simply by keyword.
