NEW BOOK IS UNIQUE LIFE AND CAREER PLANNING RESOURCE FOR LAWYERS

CHICAGO, April 13, 2006 -- An often difficult challenge facing today’s lawyers is how to cope with and thrive in an evolving professional environment.  A valuable resource for meeting that challenge is the newly released book Judge for Yourself: Clarity, Choice and Action in Your Legal Career, published by the American Bar Association in cooperation with the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.

Written for lawyers by Heather Bradley and Miriam Bamberger Grogan, with introductory remarks by Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Judge for Yourself introduces a three-step process that provides lawyers with structure and direction, so they can be the judge of their own careers. While straightforward, this process requires rigorous, honest introspection to uncover what is meaningful for the individual lawyer. Three vignettes illustrate the process, and each chapter provides skills and exercises to help readers create their own successful strategies.  Lawyers can use the manual to learn the questions to ask and practical recommendations that can help them identify and stay focused on their personal priorities.

"We are enthusiastic to offer this unprecedented resource to our members," said Steven Weise, chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Continuing Legal Education.  "Today, there is no set career path, or even definition of success, for attorneys.  Judge for Yourself provides practical, straightforward tools to help attorneys address these complicated questions."

Authors Bradley and Bamberger Grogan are the co-founders of The Flourishing Company, a workplace consulting firm based in Washington, D.C., that helps organizations maximize employee productivity and satisfaction.

Based in Washington, D.C., the Minority Corporate Counsel Association is a privately-funded 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation which, since its founding in 1997, has emerged as the leading advocate for the expanded hiring, promotion, and retention of minority attorneys in corporate legal departments and the law firms that serve them.  MCCA's efforts focus on the research, collection, and dissemination of information on the status of diversity in the legal profession, benchmarking/best practices, and the use of that information to further the association's mission.

With more than 400,000 members, the American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership organization in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law in a democratic society.
