STUDENT LAWYER

Concerned with the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in the legal profession, the organized bar has urged law students to take part in pipeline programs. Designed to introduce minority children, teens and college students to the profession, these programs can help to create a more diverse legal profession. The April 2007 issue of Student Lawyer’s “Feeding the Diversity Pipeline” addresses the benefits of these initiatives and how law students identify pipeline activities to participate in or adopt at their schools.

BUSINESS LAW TODAY

Law firms in search of work-life balance have turned to reduced-hours schedules and other innovative solutions to accommodate overworked staff. With Blackberries, affectionately referred to as “crackberries,” and other technological advances making it harder to separate life and work, more law firms are realizing the benefits of offering flexible schedules. The March/April 2007 edition of Business Law Today looks at how law firms across the nation are adopting these policies and how lawyers are taking advantage of them in “Tipping back the scales: Law firms in search of work-life balance.”

THE SCITECH LAWYER

A growing number of virtual worlds exist online, and with Real Money Trade taking place, these virtual worlds have the potential to cause significant problems in the real world. These problems include money laundering, where people with illegally obtained money can legitimize their funds by channeling them through virtual currency that can be converted to real currency, and securities fraud where a user fails to deliver a product or currency as promised. The Winter 2007 edition of The SciTech Lawyer discusses virtual worlds, potential problems, and how the virtual world can be policed in “Global Business in the Metaverse.”

PROBATE & PROPERTY

Why is it so hard to counsel multi-married families? What can be done about it? The March/April 2007 issue of Probate & Property addresses these and many other issues that arise when estate planners counsel clients who have been married multiple times. These complex situations require special attention and should be handled with care. Read “Till Death Do Us Part (Again): Estate Planning for Second Marriages” for tips on handling these types of cases.

ANTITRUST

In “Interview with U.S. Senator Herb Kohl [D-WI], Chairman, Antitrust Subcommittee,” Antitrust editor Larry Fullerton and editorial chair Mark Whitener explore a variety pf subjects. Sen. Kohl opens up about everything from promoting generic drug competition in the marketplace to media consolidation to consolidation in the airline industry. This article can be found in the Spring 2007 issue of Antitrust.

THE JOURNAL OF THE SECTION OF LITIGATION

In an entire issue dedicated to “Secrets and Lies,” the Winter 2007 Journal of the Section of Litigation discusses protecting confidential sources, defending a perjury case, “Deceitful Silence” and other related topics.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Should 14-year-olds who commit the same crimes as 40-year-olds be given the same prison sentences, even when that time amounts to life in prison without parole? Authors Victor Streib and Bernadette Schrempp say no in the article “Life Without Parole for Children,” in the Winter 2007 issue of Criminal Justice magazine. While laws state that these children should face the same penalties as adults, sentences for young offenders should not predict today what kind of adults these adolescents will be many years from now, they say.

Also in the Winter 2007 edition of Criminal Justice magazine is “Domestic Violence: When the “Perp” is a Cop.” This article addresses who victims can turn to when the violator is a police officer. Police agencies often find it hard to acknowledge that a problem lies within their ranks. As a result, this common problem often goes ignored.

LAW PRACTICE

“Advertising on the Internet” is explored in the March 2007 issue of Law Practice magazine. The article explores various forms of online advertising, including paid searches, contextual advertising, cost-per-click advertising, and search engine optimization. For more information on how law firms across the nation are implementing online ads to grow their business, call for a copy of this magazine today.
