William C. Hubbard of Columbia, S.C. is chair of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. His term began at the conclusion of the ABA Annual Meeting in New York.
The House of Delegates is the ABA’s policy-making body, and the two-year post of chair is the second-highest elected office in the organization. Currently, there are 555 delegates in the House, including representatives of state and local bar associations, substantive legal sections and divisions of the ABA, affiliated organizations, former officers, members of the Board of Governors, at-large delegates and state delegates. Action taken by the House of Delegates on specific issues becomes official policy of the ABA.
A partner at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in Columbia, Hubbard currently serves as chair of the firm’s Business Litigation and Employment Law Group. He practices business litigation related to breach of contract, business torts, breach of fiduciary duty claims, unfair trade practices and class actions.
Hubbard has long held positions of leadership in the ABA. He is a board member and past president of the American Bar Endowment, a member of the Board of the American Bar Foundation and a life member of the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation. Additionally, Hubbard chairs the ABA Commission on the World Justice Project, an international initiative designed to measure and strengthen the rule of law worldwide.
Hubbard served as the South Carolina state delegate to the ABA House of Delegates before becoming its chair. He also served as the chair of the ABA House Rules and Calendar Committee, was a member of the ABA Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary, and was a member of the association’s governing body, the ABA Board of Governors.
Hubbard is a permanent member of the U.S. Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina and the District of Columbia. In 2002, Hubbard received the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award given by the governor of South Carolina. Additionally, Hubbard has served on the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina since 1986 and served as chairman of the board from 1996-2000. Most recently, Hubbard was listed in The Best Lawyers in America (1999-2008 editions).
Prior to joining Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP, Hubbard served as a law clerk for Judge Robert F. Chapman of the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina. Hubbard earned a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1977, and a Bachelor of Arts in History, magna cum laude, from the University of South Carolina in 1974.
