July 9  Removal of Children from Their Parents: The Tightrope of Family Integrity vs. Protection, Teleconference and Webcast  This teleconference will examine the laudatory, but frequently conflicting goals in dependency proceedings of seeking family reunification, determining the best interests of the children and balancing parents’ rights to raise their children. The program will cover many of the issues discussed during the recent ABA and American Psychological Association joint program on “The Litigation Over the Children of the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.” Sponsored by: Section of Family Law, Section of State and Local Government Law and the ABA Center for Continuing Legal Education.

July 9  The Federal/State Wage Hour Conundrum: What Claims Should You Litigate and Where?, Teleconference and Webcast  Deciding what federal/state wage claims to assert, their geographic scope and the choice of forum to pursue them are just a few of the topics to be covered during this informative session. The program will also contrast state and federal wage hour claims in several areas, including travel time, tip pooling, remedies, gap time and enforceability of class action waivers in arbitration agreements. July 10  The 2009 Physician Fee Schedule: Tomorrow’s Payment Issues and More, Teleconference and Webcast  On the eve of the release of the 2009 Physician Fee Schedule, a panel will cover this year’s updates, including new Stark proposals, effects on hospital-physician relationships and other changes. July 10  Do Franchisors Have the Ultimate Leverage? Trademarks in Bankruptcy and the Implications on a Debtor’s Ability to Assume or Assign a Franchise Agreement, Teleconference and Webcast  As an increasing number of entrepreneurs explore franchising options, practitioners must be prepared to handle more than the basics in franchising agreements for their clients. Panelists for this program will offer information on the latest developments in bankruptcy, with regard to assumption and assignment of trademark licenses and franchise agreements. Other topics to be covered include limitations on a debtor’s ability to assume or assign trademark licenses and franchise agreements, and the varying standards among circuit courts. July 15  Achieving a Diverse Judiciary and Its Impact on Public Confidence in the Judicial System, Teleconference and Webcast  Listeners will be privy to hearing from diverse members of the bench, including state and federal administrative law judges, state and federal appellate judges, and state and federal trial judges. The teleconference panelists will discuss the impact and importance of a diverse judiciary in American jurisprudence, how to achieve that, and describe their journeys to the bench. July 16  Supreme Court Rules on Eminent Domain for Private Development, Teleconference and Webcast  This interactive program will assist beginning and intermediate level practitioners in improving their skills, while seasoned practitioners will benefit from updates on the most recent developments in case law and legislation. The distinguished panel consists of eminent domain and inverse condemnation practitioners, as well as Connecticut’s first state ombudsman for property rights. Sponsored by: Section of State and Local Government Law and the ABA Center for Continuing Legal Education.

July 16  What We’ve Learned from the Real Estate Crisis (So Far), Teleconference and Webcast  Though the real estate market continues to crash, experts think there is a long way to go until it hits rock bottom. This program will explore the spike in foreclosure work and how lawyers are adapting provisions of the recent federal legislation revising bankruptcy law to the current situation. The program will also assess what role, if any, lawyers should have in advising clients on mortgage financing issues and fraud in the mortgage arena.
