Beat the High Cost of Health Care With the Law Student Division

The ABA Law Student Division and Educational Finance Group (EFG) recently completed negotiations for a new 1999-2000 health insurance plan for Division members, with dramatic improvements in the coverage available to law students.

This health plan is one of the most ambitious and comprehensive membership benefits available to LSD members. There are actually two plans, Plan I (High Option) and Plan II (Low Option). Both offer a reasonably priced package, competitive with many other student insurance plans.

For $777 a year for Plan I or $598 a year for Plan II, an LSD member under the age of 35 can purchase a basic health insurance plan. The premium for each plan is somewhat higher for individuals age 35 and over. Spouses can also be added for $145 a year, children for $292 annually. Some of the significant improvements to the plan include:

Plan I–High Option

• Prescription drug benefit of $500 per policy year

• Ambulance cap removed of $400 per trip and pay at 80 percent of usual and customary

• Dental added with a $500 cap

• Deductible changed to $100 per year

• Annual physical of $100 maximum added

• Routine new baby care added at 80 percent of usual and customary

• Plan now covers allergy treatment, corns, calluses, bunions, impotence, nonmalignant warts, moles and lesions, sleep disorders, and vasectomy

• X-ray and lab increased to $800

• Day surgery miscellaneous benefit increased to $1,500

• Braces and appliances benefit added, cap of $5,000.

Plan II–Low Option

• Prescription drug benefit of $250 per policy year

• Ambulance cap removed of $400 per trip and pay at 80 percent of usual and customary

• Dental added with a $500 cap

• Deductible changed to $100 per year

• Annual physical of $100 maximum added

• Routine new baby care added at 80 percent of usual and customary

• Plan now covers allergy treatment, corns, calluses, bunions, impotence, nonmalignant warts, moles and lesions, sleep disorders, and vasectomy

• Braces and appliances benefit added, cap of $5,000.
