Texas Tech University School of Law in Lubbock is the national champion of the Law Student Division's 12th annual Negotiation Competition. Winning teammates Cynthia Wilkinson and Michael Yanof were advised by Professor Brian Shannon.Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh placed second in the competition. Team members John Munch and Gregory Paul Zimmerman were advised by Professors Robert Taylor, Robert Creo and Jan Daschbach.
The Negotiation Competition emphasizes the importance of negotiation in resolving disputes. The contest this year focused on health law. The competition simulates a transaction being negotiated between opposing teams of lawyers portrayed by law students, who must arrive at a mutually acceptable resolution.
Regional competitions began last November with 160 teams from 85 ABA-accredited law schools participating. Twenty-four teams advanced to the national competition, which was held during the American Bar Association's Midyear Meeting in February.
Boston University School of Law emerged as the national champion in the division's Client Counseling Competition. Robin Walker and Susan Seitz made up the winning team. Their faculty adviser was Professor Robert Burdick.
The Client Counseling Competition, which focused on contracts this year, emphasizes the importance of preventive law and is designed to teach law students effective client counseling skills. The competition simulates a law office consultation and presents a client problem to law students acting as lawyers. Eighty-seven teams from ABA-accredited law schools competed in the regional competition. The winners advanced to the finals in March.
The University of Baltimore School of Law placed second in the competition. Team members Linda Mason and Tari Williams were advised by Professor Arnold Rochvarg.
