First Circuit. The Native American Law Students Association
at Suffolk University hosted a guest lecture by Beverly Wright,
chairperson for the Wampanoag Tribe of Gayhead (Aquinnah), who discussed
tribal sovereignty. The group was founded last fall by student Javier
Kinney.
Second Circuit. The Lambda Law Students Association at Pace
University presented a panel discussion titled "On the Verge:
Progress and Promise in Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law."
Panelists and audience members discussed the state of sexual orientation
and gender identity law and policy
. The Syracuse University
team won first place in the Fasken Martineau First Year International
Law Moot Court Competition
. Yeshiva University's Benjamin
N. Cardozo School of Law founded a Center for Public Service Law,
which will coordinate public service and public interest activities
.
Students of the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution and the International
Law Students Association presented the International Advocate for
Peace Award to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
Third Circuit. Temple University School of Law hosted a
talk by Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Dees recently
won a federal case in which the Alabama Supreme Court was ordered
to remove from its rotunda a monument to the Ten Commandments.
Fifth Circuit. Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio and Stetson University
law dean Darby Dickerson led a "topping off" ceremony
for the school's new law center, which is expected to be a hub for
legal activity in downtown Tampa. The center, due for completion
in December, will house evening law classes, the Tampa branch of
the Florida Second District Court of Appeal, and continuing legal
education programs. Classes are expected to begin in January
.
A team from the University of Florida took first place in the Herbert
Wechsler National Moot Court Competition in Buffalo, N.Y.
Sixth Circuit. The ABA Law Student Division's Sixth Circuit
governor, Joan Walker, is forming a committee to develop programming
for diversity events at law schools nationwide. For further information,

The University of Detroit School of Law sponsored an auction fund-raiser
for public interest summer fellowships in the Detroit area. The
school also hosted, with assistance from the ABA Government and
Public Sector Lawyers Division, a public interest career panel
.
The student bar association at Thomas M. Cooley Law School sponsored
a charity raffle at its annual Barristers Ball. The proceeds went
to the Lansing City Rescue Mission to help purchase a refrigerated
van to distribute food. Also at Cooley, the ABA Law Student Division
chapter sponsored midterm tutorials for more than 200 first-year
students
. University of Cincinnati law students Patricia Foster
and Susan Coan took first place in the 2003 National Representation
in Mediation Competition, sponsored by the ABA Section of Dispute
Resolution
. University of Dayton law professor Susan Brenner
is recruiting students to write for her cybercrime web site. Students
from any law school who are interested in the topic can visit the

Eighth Circuit. The SBA at Creighton University organized
a charity auction to raise money for the Literacy Center for the
Midlands
. Creighton's Environmental Law Society sponsored
Earth Week, featuring numerous speakers on environmental law
.
Phi Delta Phi and Creighton undergraduates organized a Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for Omaha-area citizens
.
The Association of Women Law Students at the University of Missouri-Kansas
City hosted several events, including Safety Week, which included
programs on domestic violence, rape, and self-defense; a reception
honoring the achievements of women in the law; and a fund-raiser
where the group auctioned off lunches with local lawyers and judges
.
UMKC hosted a fund-raiser for the Midwest Innocence Project. Kevin
Green, an exonerated man, spoke about his wrongful conviction and
eventual release from charges of murder.
Eleventh Circuit. Law students from American University
and lawyers from Arnold & Porter met with high school students
in Washington, D.C., who were taking part in an educational program
sponsored by the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
The high school students participated in mock jury selection, court
proceedings, and jury deliberation.
Twelfth Circuit. At the University of Oregon law school
commencement, ABA national secretary Ellen Rosenblum, a state judge
and 1975 alumna, received the school's Meritorious Service Award.
Thirteenth Circuit. The University of Texas School of Law
teamed up with the Austin Shakespeare Festival to present a dramatic
performance and panel discussion on "Henry V and the Law of
War." Faculty members Steven Ratner and Paul Woodruff commented
on the international legal and ethical issues surrounding the conduct
of war in Shakespeare's day and drew implications about how wars
are conducted today.
Fourteenth Circuit. The ABA Section of Antitrust Law and
Stanford Law School cosponsored the Stanford Conference on Antitrust
in the Technology Economy in June. The program covered topics such
as the intersection of antitrust and intellectual property, licensing
problems, and anticompetitive settlements.
Fifteenth Circuit. Two Arizona State University 3Ls, Kiersten
Murphy and Karen Stillwell, argued in April before a panel of the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Seattle. The students
represented clients in a case against a U.S. bankruptcy trustee.
