More About the Practice of Environmental Law

Several American Bar Association entities deal with environmental law issues, and student membership is often at a reduced rate. To join any ABA section or to order a publication, call 800-285-2221. A complete publications catalog is at www.abanet.org/abapubs.

The 11-member Standing Committee on Environmental Law (202-662-1693, www.abanet.org/publicserv/environmental.html) examines and analyzes environmental law and policy issues, develops ABA policies in the field, and coordinates ABA environmental law policy-making and program activities. An ABA publication featured on its web site is the Directory of Pro Bono Legal Services Providers for Environmental Justice.

The Section of Environment, Energy, and Resources (312-988-5791, www.abanet.org/sonreel/home.html), formerly known as the Section of Natural Resources, Energy, and Environmental Law, publishes a quarterly scholarly magazine and a bimonthly newsletter, in addition to many books and monographs. Students are welcome to join the section’s meetings and Internet chat groups. Student membership is $5.

The Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section (202-662-1030, www.abanet.org/irr/home.html) has an Environmental Justice Committee, which coordinates task forces to promote awareness and reduction of environmental hazards in local communities. Students can ask to be placed on a task force in their community. Student membership is $7.50.

The Section of Litigation (312-988-5664) has an Environmental Litigation Committee (www.abanet.org/litigation/committee/environmental/home.html). Its domain is environmental, toxic tort, hazardous waste, natural resources, insurance coverage, private cost recovery, and regulatory litigation concerning environmental issues, criminal and civil. Members participate in the regional assessment of environmental law developments, publish a newsletter, and coordinate programs with other groups that are interested in pursuing environmental law programs. Student membership is $5.

The Tort and Insurance Practice Section (312-988-5672, www. abanet.org/tips/home.html) will host its spring meeting in Orlando in March, where the section’s Committee on Toxic Torts and Environmental Law will offer a program on high-tech computer allocation models for determining risks and costs of environmental litigation. A limited number of scholarships is available for law students interested in attending. Student membership is $5.
