Schools Honored for Exceptional Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

Each year, the Law Student Division recognizes the top student Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs at law schools around the country. Each site nationwide deserves recognition for its outstanding work. Some sites, however, truly stand out for their commitment to excellence. In August, the LSD recognized these schools during its annual meeting in Atlanta.

The Rookie Site of the Year award goes to a true rookie site in every respect. Congratulations to Western State University College of Law in Fullerton, Calif., which received its provisional accreditation in July 1998. Although Western State students decided late that they wanted to establish a VITA site at their school, with the help of their faculty adviser and co-directors they created an outstanding rookie site. This site offered services in 10 languages and instituted procedures to ensure a successful site for future years.

The Continuing Site of the Year award goes to Arizona State University College of Law, which started its recruiting process in the summer. While this award is not primarily decided on whoever completes the most tax returns, Arizona State completed an impressive 1,829 tax returns this tax season. It also did an outstanding job with the training program for volunteers.

The Lieutenant Governor of VITA of the Year goes to Stephan Boulanger, a 3L at Southwestern University School of Law in Los Angeles. Boulanger’s leadership ensured a tremendous turnout from throughout his circuit, the 9th. “Steve really impressed me with his arduous efforts in VITA,” said 9th Circuit governor Ali Jahangiri, a second-year student at Loyola Marymount University Law School in Los Angeles. “He has left us with an excellent foundation to build upon.”

Congratulations to all award winners and to everyone who participated in the 1998-99 VITA program, and best of luck in making the 1999-2000 VITA program even more successful.

Angela Boeck

Angela Boeck, a third-year student at Washburn University School of Law, was the 1998-99 national director for VITA.
