American Bar AssociationThe ABA General Practice, Solo, and Small Firm Section (www.abanet.org/genpractice) has more than 10,000 lawyers. The section provides information and assistance to lawyers, with 40 committees that produce newsletters on substantive topics as well as marketing, delivery of legal services, and technology.
Small firm directoriesSome law school placement offices maintain listings of small-firm employers in the region. At the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, this list is posted on the Career Planning and Placement Office web site and can be downloaded and formatted into a mail-merge listing. If you are targeting another region, check to see if any area law schools maintain similar lists.
Bar associationsMany local bar associations host sections exclusively for solo and small firm practitioners. If this is the case, inquire about obtaining a listing of small firms through the bar association. If you are interested in networking with small firm practitioners, see about attending monthly meetings and other get-togethers to put yourself in circulation.
Lexis/NexisThe Martindale-Hubbell database is available on Lexis/Nexis in a searchable format. To find smaller firms, simply use the segment "firm-size <" to retrieve information about area employers. Consider adding a segment for practice area; otherwise, you will retrieve an undifferentiated list of small firms without a specific practice emphasis. For example, if youre seeking information about all environmental law practitioners in Pittsburgh who practice with firms of 25 or fewer lawyers, try this search using the MARHUB library, ALLDIR file: "city (pittsburgh) and practice (environmental) and firm-size < 25."
