LSD CIRCUIT BOARD

February 2000 Vol. 28, No. 7

First Circuit. In honor of National Caregiver Month, the Suffolk University Elder Society held a raffle to raise money for the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Foundation. Western New England College hosted its 25th annual basketball tournament in Springfield, Mass., home of the National Basketball Association Hall of Fame . . . . The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded Northeastern Univeristy’s law school and two Boston-area legal service agencies a grant to provide legal services for battered women and their children.

Second Circuit. Andy Berman, the ABA representative at Syracuse University, organized a service project in downtown Syracuse along with the student bar association. Kudos to Mellissa Longo and the ABA committee at New York Law School for organizing food, clothing, and Toys for Tots drives during the holidays.

Fifth Circuit. Congratulations to the Emory University School of Law’s Public Interest Committee, which received the 1999 Outstanding Member Group Project Award by the National Association for Public Interest Law.

Seventh Circuit. Chicago-Kent’s student bar association and student services department brought in a masseuse, whose services were free to law students as part of a "Stress-Buster" program. Other organizations provided study snacks for their members during the last exam period.

Eighth Circuit. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is very strong this year, with eight out of 13 law schools participating.

Ninth Circuit. Whittier College put on its Annual Nevis Softball Tournament for the entire circuit. Schools from across the circuit participated in this event and reportedly had a blast. Each school SBA pitched in $250 to play, and the winning school donated the money collected to its charity of choice. Thanks to Whittier’s very active ABA representative Shane Stafford and SBA president Ryan Vos for a very successful event.

Twelfth Circuit. Students at Seattle University organized a follow-up event to their Work-A-Day project to do tree plant-ing for salmon streams . . . . Ernesto "Jack" Piza, lieutenant governor for VITA, is working hard to have the entire Twelfth Circuit on board for this up-coming tax season . . . . Welcome aboard to Kiana Sarraf, the newest school representative from the University of Washington.

Fourteenth Circuit. VITA is going strong in San Francisco with a collaborative effort by the University of California-Hastings, University of San Francisco, and Golden Gate University . . . . The entire circuit collaborated on an ambitious Habitat for Humanity project . . . . Students from Hastings and USF participated in a mentoring program for 400 seventh-graders in San Francisco. The program is part of a larger program designed to track the students through high school with the hopes of getting more students into college. •
