The Write Position for You?

Applications are due Feb. 1, 1999, for the 1999-2000 position of student editor for Student Lawyer.

The student editor is responsible for reporting on Law Student Division issues and writing stories of national significance for Student Lawyer's "Division Dialogue" section. The editor also is a nonvoting member of the division's Board of Governors and of the board's Operations and Publications Committee.

Although Student Lawyer's editorial staff will assign and suggest stories, the student editor is responsible for developing sources and contacts among officers, division delegates, liaisons, circuit governors and other Law Student Division leaders so that he or she can report effectively on ongoing stories concerning division activities and law school news. The student editor also may have the opportunity to work on other division task forces.

The student editor will travel to the April meeting of the Law Student Division's Board of Governors to develop new contacts and to get an overview of how the division works; to the division's August meeting to maintain these contacts and to report on the meeting for the "Division Dialogue" section; and to the November Board of Governors meeting to report on division business and officer elections. The editor also may have the opportunity to travel to circuit meetings during the school year.

The student editor will work with division officers and governors to develop and write the "Spotlight" column which appears each month. He or she will also receive and review articles submitted for publication in the magazine, and will undertake other editorial tasks as necessary.

Because the student editor will be responsible for all aspects of division news coverage, strong writing and reporting skills are necessary. Previous journalism and editorial decision-making experience is also necessary.

To apply, send a letter of application, resume, writing samples and proof of Law Student Division membership to Stephanie Johnston, editor, Student Lawyer, 750 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL 60611. Applications must be postmarked no later than Feb. 1, 1999. Finalists will be selected and interviewed by telephone, and the student editor will be chosen by late February. The position runs through March 31, 2000.
