South Texas College of Law Celebrates Birthday and Success

South Texas College of Law clinched the Outstanding School of the Year Membership Award at the ABA’s annual meeting last August. The award topped an incredible year for the school, which celebrated its 75th birthday last year. After its humble beginnings in the basement of the Houston YMCA building, the school now encompasses a complete block in the city’s downtown.

South Texas student bar association president Marvin Laws, a third-year student, accepted the award. "This award is the result of the hard work and efforts of the entire student body and faculty," Laws said. "Teamwork is very important to South Texas."

South Texas earned the award because of its impressive increase in Law Student Division membership. The driving force was ABA representative Heather Dawson, now a 3L and LSD secretary-treasurer. Dawson also encouraged student organizations to join together to participate in community service projects.

The most memorable project was the highly successful MusicFest, created by the South Texas Sports and Entertainment Law Society. MusicFest was a huge success and raised money for both the Special Olympics and music departments of local schools.

Congratulations to the hard-working students at South Texas College of Law, and keep up the great work! •
