1st Circuit

Members of the 1st Circuit turned out in force to support cancer research during the Walk for Breast Cancer. Suffolk University held a social to benefit the walk, including a raffle, free food, and drinks. … Boston College drew more than 100 runners during the Fourth Annual Race Ipsa Loquitur, a joint ABA/SBA-sponsored event.

2nd Circuit

The Syracuse University ABA chapter has seen tremendous growth under the leadership of ABA representative Andy Berman. … At New York Law School, executive lieutenant circuit governor and ABA representative Mellissa Longo organized a successful service project through N.Y. Cares with corporate co-sponsor Merrill Lynch. … St. John’s Law School SBA president T.J. Keevins hosted an ABA day on Nov. 4. … Chris Lucht and David McAlexander have been introducing the ABA to the Columbia University campus.

3rd Circuit

Congratulations to Duquesne University, Temple University, and Villanova University for starting and organizing their chapter charters. … Michael Caramelo, a student at Temple University and lieutenant governor for communications, has unveiled the circuit’s new web site. … Classes have begun at the University of Maryland at a temporary site as the law school building is completely demolished to make way for a new facility. Students expressed appreciation for the efforts of interim dean Karen Rothenberg, who has worked to ease the transition and accommodate student concerns.

4th Circuit

For an ABA/LSD Outreach Assistance Initiative (OAI) project, more than 200 students from Campbell University assisted with flood relief efforts in eastern North Carolina after Hurricane Floyd devastated the region in September.

5th Circuit

5th Circuit schools raised more than $1,600 for charity during their annual auction. … Stetson University, Georgia State University, Florida State University, the University of Alabama, and Mercer University pitched in with PMBR and BAR/BRI to generate more than $1,200 of that total.

6th Circuit

The University of Louisville ABA/LSD chapter and SBA hosted a luncheon with the Kentucky Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments at the school. … Ohio Northern University brought law schools from throughout the circuit together for a flag football tournament. … The University of Cincinnati and the Salmon P. Chase College of Law are joining together to sponsor a public service project.

7th and 8th Circuits

Members of the 7th and 8th circuits attended the Annual Race Ipsa Loquitur in Chicago during their joint Fall Roundtable in September. The 5K race was organized by Loyola University, and proceeds went to benefit the Legal Assistance Foundation of Chicago. … The ABA Standing Committee on Judicial Independence presented a forum on judicial campaign finance reform and judicial selection at DePaul University.

9th Circuit

More than 1,500 members of the 9th Circuit attended the Annual Bash at the Century Club in Los Angeles. … The Whittier Law School ABA chapter and SBA co-sponsored a heavily attended debate on gun control. … For its Work-A-Day project, the circuit showed its support for the community during the AIDS Walk in Los Angeles.

11th Circuit

The ABA chapter at Catholic University of America sponsored two speakers last fall. The first brought young associates back to school to discuss their experiences in a panel discussion titled "Surviving as an Associate." The law school also hosted Lynn M. Bragg, chairman of the U.S. International Trade Commission, who presented "A Year of Sunset Reviews: A Report Card From the Chairman," in which she spoke on the progress of the Uruguay Round Agreement.

12th Circuit

Seattle University students volunteered to assist with salmon habitat rehabilitation during their Work-A-Day project. Chapter co-presidents Paul Slusher and Annette Borell worked hard to organize an "Oktoberfest" membership social. … At Gonzaga University, lieutenant governors Stephanie Haug and Guy Testini are conducting various projects that will benefit every member of the circuit. … ABA representative Jon Miller of Willamette University has gone all out to make himself present on campus, manning a table every week for the last two months.

13th Circuit

The 13th Circuit has unveiled a new web site, www.abanet.org/ lsd/13thcircuit/home.html. … The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit heard oral arguments at the University of Houston during the first week of October. … The Texas Supreme Court appeared at Texas Tech University. … Loyola University New Orleans hosted the Region Seven Tournament of the Association of the City of New York Bar, 50th Annual National Moot Court Competition. … Texas Wesleyan University has celebrated its rise from partial ABA accreditation to full accreditation this year.

14th Circuit

The University of California, Hastings, enrolled more than 300 students in its Buddy Program, matching veteran students with 1Ls. … At the University of San Francisco, students participate in weekly public service projects in the Bay area. … All the schools in the circuit are working on a joint Habitat for Humanity project in the spring.

15th Circuit

The circuit’s spring meeting will be held at Arizona State University during its annual Volunteer Income Tax Assistance training. ASU won the VITA School of the Year Award. … The University of Denver ABA chapter sponsored a panel on Miranda v. Arizona. The panel included Tim Lynch of the CATO Institute, William Ottice, formerly of the U.S. attorney general’s office, and Penny White, former Tennessee Supreme Court justice. •
