Diversity Events Promote Rich Experiences for Law Students

Law is a profession that caters to people of all backgrounds. The legal issues people face are often inseparable from their culture, race, or nationality. As a result, solving a client's legal problems requires more than just an understanding of the law-it demands the ability to appreciate the person as well.

Recognizing this, the ABA Law Student Division proudly sponsors Diversity Day every April. This year's Diversity Day is April 4. Watch your school's announcements for activities that highlight your student body's cultural offerings.

Loyola Law School of Los Angeles develops diversity programming on a regular basis. "At Loyola we are committed to diversity because it enriches the educational climate in which we teach and learn," says David W. Burcham, Loyola's associate dean for academic affairs. "Students from diverse backgrounds often view legal problems in significantly different ways. Accepting these differences, yet emphasizing the common goals that law can provide, proves to be extremely rewarding."

It is not too soon to start planning your Diversity Day events now for this coming April. Remember that the Law Student Division offers Professionalism, Ethics, and Diversity (PED) funding for students interested in starting their own diversity programs. For more information and to download an application, visit the ABA/LSD's web site at www.abanet.org/ lsd/ped.html.
