A ‘Best-Kept Secret’

Meet Legal Policy Shapers as a Student Liaison to an ABA Entity

So you want to get involved with the Law Student Division, but you just don’t know how? Apply today to become a liaison.

The LSD liaison program appoints more than 50 students every year to serve as representatives on the many sections, divisions, and forums of the American Bar Association. Ranging from criminal justice to taxation, these groups focus on major practice areas, national policy interests, and various ABA concerns. (See November’s Student Lawyer for a list of current liaisons.)

As a liaison, you will serve on the governing board of one of these groups and act as the official communicator between the entity and the LSD. Often characterized as "one of the best-kept secrets of the LSD," the liaison program provides several wonderful and unique opportunities for LSD members.

As a liaison, not only will you gain firsthand knowledge in a given legal area, you’ll also have the chance to speak face to face and work side by side with some of the brightest and most influential lawyers in their fields. In addition, "liaising" will give you a bird’s-eye view into the real practice world and life after law school. Although a liaison’s responsibilities will vary, all liaisons share the common task of operating as a vital link to all law students through the LSD.

How do you apply? It’s easy! Just fill out the application on page 56 and tell us why you want to become an LSD liaison. General items to highlight in your application include your LSD leadership experience, ABA section memberships, background, and personal interests. The LSD is always looking for qualified, ambitious, and enthusiastic people to get involved and proudly represent law students.

Get in on the secret and don’t miss out on one of the most prestigious LSD positions available. Questions? Contact Angela R. Karras by phone, 812- 330-9363, or by e-mail, arkarras @indiana.edu. •
